Skin is the biggest organ of every human being. If we could take it off and stretch, it would attain surface of almost 2,20yd². Basically, it comprises on 15% of all body weight. The next time you step on the scale, remember how many your skin weights. What is more, there are two basic types of skin: smooth and hairy. The first type occurs on the palm of the hands and on soles of the feet. The second type covers the rest of a human body.

Another feature of skin, it comprises of three layers. The first one, the most external layer, is called epidermis. It is this part of skin in particular that we tend to exfoliate, moisturize, care and force to undergo all beautifying treatments. The second layer poses co-called dermis. All sensitive nerve endings, sweat glands and sebaceous glands as well as hair capsules are located exactly in the second layer of skin. Furthermore, skin is the extremely elastic and expandable organ. This feature is easy to observe, for example, during muscle contraction or pregnancy period. What is more, accordingly to the skin location, it is characterized by various durability level. With this in mind, skin covering our abdomen is different from the parts covering joints. Obviously, you might have noticed, that new skin layer that was rebuilt on a wound, comprises neither of sebaceous glands nor follicles. What can be also observed, this kind of skin is generally darker, thicker and more rugged and hard.

While talking about the thickness of the skin, definitely, human’s larger organ indicates different values of it, depending on the place occurring. The thinnest layer covers eyelids. To demonstrate, the exact amount of eyelid skin equals 0,02 mm. Despite the small quantity of it, the skin still is able to protect eyes from all impurities and mechanical damages. On the other hand, the thickest layer of skin covers soles of the feet and its gauge equals 1,4 mm. Skin in those parts of our body has to be extremely durable. Unfortunately, because of its thickness, we have to pay attention to those areas of our body and take care of these properly since cracked heels does not belong to the most aesthetic views.

Furthermore, for moisturization and protection are responsible the lipids which are the natural fats occurring in human’s body skin. If it happens, that we drink to much alcohol and tend to wash our skin with cosmetics comprising of detergents (present also in solvents, cleaning and scouring agents used to home cleaning,) we disturb and harm the protective lipid barrier of ours.

When it comes to melanin, this skin element is responsible for colour of our biggest organ. The substance, in turn, is synthesized by melanocytes. As it is generally-known, skin can have several shades, yellow, red, dark brown or even almost black. Mealnine indicates also eyes and hair colour.
